SUSTAINABILITY AND GREEN SPACES

Concordia University is committed to being a leader in sustainability and has a series of initiatives in place, including the Sustainability Action Plan.

Help us attain our sustainability goals by submitting your ideas for improving the Loyola and Sir George Williams campuses.

To help get you thinking, here are some areas we've already identified through initial analysis:

The need to preserve, increase and enhance the natural environments and biodiversity of the campuses
Increased use of the campuses as living labs
The adoption of a landscape strategy to identify and protect campus species
Community-minded management green-spaces
Linking the Campus Master Plan with the university's sustainability initiatives, policies and action plan

unknown author5 years ago It is not sustainable for the grave injustices of our times to continue. A sustainable future is a just future. We need radical change to our complete way of living in order to survive. We cannot allow sustainability to be green washed by corporations so they can squeeze out more profit while they continue their harmful practices here and else where. A sustainable future must be grass roots and community led. A sustainable future must take guidance and leadership from indigenous peoples who have been the caretakers and protectors of this land since time immemorial.

unknown author5 years ago We live on Doherty Avenue close to the north end of Loyola Campus. We are one of many families in the surrounding neighbourhood who are concerned about Concordia’s future plans. Despite promises to be a good neighbour, Concordia has previously failed to consult with the surrounding community on its expansion plans and caused much disturbance for us in the recent past. I am referring, notably to the following issues: The erection of unsightly and noisy towers on the roof of the science building. These towers were not mentioned during a pre-construction consultation with the surrounding community or indicated in drawings. The noise generated by this system disturbed our quiet neighbourhood and required a concerted effort by residents to get mitigation measures taken by the university. Despite indicating in the consultation phase the remaining green space behind the science building would be landscaped, residents were informed after construction that the contractor had just “thrown down some grass seed” and left. The result is a weed-filled eyesore where there was once a beautiful playing field that was much used by Concordia students and staff and the community. The university demolished a temporary structure and replaced it with a larger, permanent energy efficiency research house without informing neighbours. This required the construction of a temporary road and many more months of noisy construction on top of what residents had already endured during the construction of the science building. All of this construction activity has caused inconvenience to nearby residents in the form of noise, a huge and unsightly mountain of dirt for over two years from the construction of the science building and, most importantly, a significant loss of green space.Concordia’s master plan should prioritize preserving in perpetuity what remains of green space on the Loyola campus for the benefit of faculty, staff, students and the surrounding community. In particular, priority should be given to landscaping and tree planting in the north end of the campus to contribute to the quality of life of the university community, our city and the fight against climate change. We would oppose, in particular, any further construction in the north end of the campus, given the need for green space in our community and the quiet, peaceful nature of the surrounding neighbourhood.

unknown author5 years ago Concordia University has already destroyed several green spaces at the Loyola Campus, with the most recent example being the new science building placed on the Hingston Hall field. This building could easily have been built on the adjacent parking lot, which has plenty of room. The Loyola campus has the smaller parking lot adjacent to the Hingston Hall field that can be developed and the larger one on the eastern end of the campus. The larger parking lot has plenty of room for several tasteful structures that are brick clad to blend in with the campus.The new science building - glass clad, sticks out like a sore thumb and is a definite eyesore, and it is clear that the university wants to erect more buildings on the Hingston Hall field.We need a total ban on the development of the remaining green space at the Loyola Campus and that has to be put into place immediately. The Loyola Campus is a brilliant mixture of buildings and green spaces and is beloved by the community for being accessible and green. The people of NDG appreciate having a local university that can be attended by local students and the green spaces that it provides. It is a sanctuary of green.Until the erection of the new building, the university and the public were living in concordia. It was a perfect relationship. We had a center of higher learning and a community green space. As a coach with NDG Soccer, we used the Hingston Hall field as a practice field.The university can easily plant more trees at the Loyola Campus, as well as setting up several pollinator gardens to help Monarch butterflies, bees, and other insects. Fruit trees and berry bushes can also be planted to help local wildlife.We need Concordia to realize that the green spaces at the Loyola Campus are public ones and that they must be protected for the long-term. The parking lots at the Loyola Campus can be developed and with Concordia desiring to be more green, can do with fewer parking spots. The Loyola Campus is served by three bus lines - the 105, 162, and 51; three Metro stations - Villa Maria, Vendome, and the one on Queen Mary, and by the Shuttle Bus. People don't need cars to access the campus.I thus implore you, both as an NDG resident and as an alumnus of the university, to place an immediate ban on the development of the remaining green spaces at the Loyola Campus. This can easily be done - please do it ASAP.
