INTERFACES AND CAMPUS DENSIFICATION

Concordia University is facing a shortage of space for teaching, learning and research. It anticipates a deficit of 115,000 square meters over the coming 10 years. As it looks to address space needs, heritage and sustainable development will be important considerations.

Space is at a premium on the Island of Montreal and the university wants to avoid contributing to urban sprawl. With that in mind, do you have ideas for the development of the Loyola and Sir George William campuses?

To help get you thinking, here are some areas we've already identified through initial analysis:

Favouring development projects focused around central buildings (Quartier Concordia)
Upholding strong environmental standards and meeting energy efficiency targets
Investing in heritage buildings and improving their efficiency
Aligning university development with City of Montreal planning
Finding space solutions mindful of the scarcity of available city land

unknown author5 years ago Concordia has nationally recognized basketball teams yet they play in facilities that are an embrassment both for them and the university. Please rebuild the gym into a more modern triple gym facility on the land immediately in front of the current gym that will benefit varsity, intramural and community groups in equal measure. I am sure the current gym can be repurposed as part of the new facility and it will also allow for the expansion of staff offices, athlete prep facilities and a bigger foyer serving both the arena and gym complex.

unknown author5 years ago Since Concordia already owns the Hall building and several of the buildings on Mackay between de Maisonneuve and Sherbrooke, there is an opportunity there to create additional green space/walking space. Consult with the city of Montreal and request that the space be turned into a park. It would be enjoyable for students but also for residents. Since this could take a long time because there are non-Concordia buildings on the street as well, a temporary alternative would be to use the alley between the Hall building and the first annex on the East side of the street as additional seating and green space. For the park/green space, it would be great to have many benches but for the greenery, how about creating an edible landscaped garden of perennials with permaculture? The produce could then be used by the People's Potato to provide food for students. I know this was proposed a while ago and it did not happen - it would be nice to try again. We lack green space downtown and the Concordia community is growing so every year it gets more and more crowded. It would be important to have additional green space.

unknown author5 years ago There are a large number of residential row houses on both campuses that have been used to accommodate the sprall of university departments. These buildings are ill-suited to academic use. They are also not being properly maintained; their physical condition gives an appearance of neglect.Repatriate these departments to the main campuses and concert these residential buildings into affordable housing.
